I Got Fired From My First Job (And I Deserved It) | Monday Push

Hebrews 12:11 Newsletter

Good morning Reader,

When I was in high school, I got fired from my first job. Honestly? I deserved it. I didn't really need the job, so I called in a lot — sometimes just because I was tired or had something better to do. I even told them in the interview that school came first.

A few years later, I ran into one of the owners at Walmart. I was in college by then, studying engineering. She was shocked. And honestly, I don't blame her. I never gave her a reason to believe I'd turn out okay.

My Favorite Verse, Part 10

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. — Colossians 3:23 NLT

Back then, my bad habits didn't cost me much. I had no real responsibilities. But if I tried that same attitude today, as an adult? The consequences would be huge.

Not everyone gets to work somewhere they love. That's just real life. So this verse is one to keep in your back pocket for the hard days. I've worked jobs I didn't enjoy, and this verse kept my mindset right when I needed it most. It reminds me of two things:

  1. God is my real supervisor — even when my manager isn't watching.
  2. Not liking the task doesn't give me permission to do it halfway.

Holding onto those two truths changes the way you carry yourself at work. Picture it — walking out at the end of the day without dragging that resentment home with you. Not snapping at your spouse or your kids because work drained you dry. Showing up the next morning without dreading it before your feet even hit the floor. That's what shifting your mindset can actually do for you.

And here's the thing — you want to leave every job in a good place, even the one you're ready to quit. Plus, that job is still how you're providing for your family right now.

While you're there, you can still grow. Apply for something new. Learn a skill. Go for the promotion. Maybe the problem isn't even the company — maybe it's just the department where you work. Either way, how long you stay is still your choice.

Reflection Question: What's one fresh perspective that could shift how you think about work this week?

If this verse speaks to you, commit it to memory or write it somewhere you'll see it often. You'll be amazed how differently your days feel when you're doing the work with God in mind — instead of clocking in and clocking out with no purpose behind it.

Prayer of the Week: Dear God, help me work with excellence today, even when I don't feel like it. Remind me I'm working for You. Thank you for providing for my family through this job. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Talk to you soon!
